Welcome to the Arkansas Table Tennis Academy (ARKTTA)

Arkansas Table Tennis Academy (ARKTTA) is Arkansas's premier dedicated training center for the Olympic and international sport of table tennis.

ARKTTA focuses on growing the sport of table tennis in Arkansas by:

  • introducing more people to the sport of table tennis
  • developing training programs for youth, adults and seniors, and
  • providing organized league competition.

Players of all ages and skill levels will have an opportunity to improve their table tennis abilities and overall health and fitness.  ARKTTA will collaborate with other table tennis organizations, community centers, and schools to create a positive atmosphere in which everyone has the opportunity to participate in a safe and healthy sport that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.

We will actively seek sponsors to help reduce financial barriers for entry into the sport, promote the numerous benefits of table tennis, and support other service-oriented community programs.

Details on ARKTTA memberships are forthcoming.  We will have options for players who want to training regularly each month and for those who want to train every now and then.  There will also be specials for junior players and equipment packages for those who are getting started.  Players who have membership will be able to access all of the academy's training tools.

Status of ARKTTA

The Arkansas Table Tennis Academy originally planned for a launch date near mid-August 2018, but since I am a table tennis coach/player and not a construction professional, I greatly underestimated the time it would take to finish the space.  Our maintenance contractors were also busy on other projects, so it took longer than anticipated to find time to get everything done.  However, we are in the final stretches as you can see below from the latest update as we work hard to make the academy a reality.

Be sure to check out our Google Photo Album of the progress!

Update - Fri, Nov 30, 2018

  • In the month of November we wrapped up almost all of the interior finishing.  The drywall is finished and painted.  The golden tarps are installed on the walls above and the drywall and on the interior of the garage door.  All of the concrete floor has been sealed.
  • The last big task left is to finish installing the red tournament flooring. We started this before Thanksgiving but then took the week off for the holiday to spend time with family and friends.
  • Hopefully the flooring installation will be finished this weekend and we'll be able to start playing table tennis next week.
  • Stay tuned!  And check out the latest photos in the photo album link above because the academy is looking amazing!  All of the hard work and patience will be worth it.

Update - Tue, Nov 6, 2018

  • A lot of exciting things have happened in latter part of September and all of October since the last update.  There is a lot in this update, so buckle up!
  • All of the 8-foot fluorescent light fixtures and circuits have been installed.  The light level in most areas is over 700 lux, which is very good for training.
  • The bathroom is finished and includes painted walls, crown molding, baseboards, ceiling, and new fixtures:  ceiling vent/light, medicine cabinet with mirror, wall light fixture, and faucet.  The bathroom floor is stained a gold leaf color.
  • All of the electrical work is finished.  Existing outlets were removed and reconfigured.  Light switch was installed near back door to control the wall light on the back covered area.  Outlets were added on the back wall and the long wall opposite the bathroom.  Outlets on either side of the exterior bathroom walls were fixed.
  • Drywall installation started last week.  Mudding is wrapping up this week and then we'll be able to prime and paint this week or the coming weekend.
  • The gold colored canvas tarps that will cover the walls above the drywall arrived.  We were able to secure most of them, but because the drywall installation was starting, we had to remove the one that covers the garage door, and raise the other tarps to avoid damage.  After the drywall is painted, the tarps will go back into place.
  • About 2/3 of the floor was cleaned and sealed.  After the drywall painting is finished, the entire floor will be cleaned again and remaining 1/3 will be sealed.
  • 9 rolls of red tournament flooring arrived and will be installed after the floor sealant dries.
  • The 400 square foot covered area in the back outside was cleared off for our use.
  • Security system was installed last week which can be controlled remotely online.
  • For training tools, we received and have tested the latest Newgy 3050XL.  This robot is controlled by tablet via Bluetooth and will help beginning players learn basic strokes and provide challenges for even the most experienced players.  We also have training products developed by USATT National Coach Samson Dubina:  TT-Flex, TT-Serve, his book 100 Days of Table Tennis, and his DVD International Table Tennis Skills.  Members of ARKTTA will be able to use all of these tools and more to improve their skills and have fun training.
  • In mid-September, I received my USATT National Coaching certification and ITTF Level 3 Coaching certification.  This for me has been a huge milestone after a 6-year long coaching journey.  I am thrilled to be able to share my experiences with new and experienced players who come to training at ARKTTA.

Update - Mon, Sep 10, 2018

  • 5 of the 6 remaining light fixtures have been installed, but still need to be connected to the existing circuit.
  • Bathroom interior walls are patched, sanded, primed.  The initial coats of orange paint are a huge pop of color.
  • Exterior molding/framing on and above the bathroom is in progress.
  • 6 more Newgy barriers have been reconditioned and assembled, bringing total to 12, which is perfect number for the court layouts.

Update - Fri, Aug 24, 2018

  • Took delivery of 2 Joola tables refurbished from use at 2018 World Veterans Championships in Las Vegas.  We now have 2 Donic Waldner Classic 25 tables and 2 Joola 3000 SC tables.
  • Also delivered were large quantities of training and tournament balls
  • Ceiling lighting upgrades are underway
  • AC drain rerouted to outside and dehumidifier setup to run continuously
  • Exterior bathroom walls and the long wall on the bathroom side are fully painted.

Update - Tue, Aug 14, 2018

  • A touch up coat of Fawn Brindle in some needed areas.
  • Thoroughly cleaned the area on top of the bathroom, including the only section of wall that we weren't able to paint previously.  This weekend we'll have this part of the wall primed and painted, which will really tie the entire wall together.
  • Searched the interior and exterior for areas that need to be better weatherproofed.

Update - Fri-Sun, Aug 10-12, 2018

  • This weekend we put paint on the walls!  We're using Sherwin Williams in North Little Rock on Maumelle Blvd.  We primed and painted one of the long walls a neutral color called Fawn Brindle.  The exterior walls of the bathroom are two-tone...the sides are Espalier, and the front is House Plant.
  • We also spent a lot of time continuing to clean.  The amount of dust that has built up over the years is crazy.  But it's all getting cleaned up slowly but surely.
  • I'm really focused on providing excellent playing conditions, so in order to better control the humidity, I set up a 70-pint dehumidifer by GE that I purchased from Home Depot.  This thing is easy to set up, runs quietly, and does a wonderful job reducing the humidity.  After several tests, it will bring the humidity down from 75% to 55% in about an hour.  It has an internal pump and drain hose so that it can run continuously or as needed with the programmable humidistat.  For a 1,800 square foot warehouse space, this dehumidifier is having no trouble at all.

Update - Fri-Sun, Aug 4-6, 2018

  • Finish vacuuming wall beams and insulating for dust removal and preparation for drywall.  Continue removal of paint, grease and other buildup on the floors.  Power wash and clean one section to that will be used for the court of Table #1.  Clean existing drywall to prepare for primer.
  • This coming Tuesday, August 7, I'll be meeting with maintenance contractor to review construction tasks that will hopefully take place in the next several weeks.
  • I'm hoping to be able to start individual lessons and training sessions for groups of 2 by mid-August, and groups of 8 by September 1.

  • Many items off the checklist: spread cat litter on grease spots, dust air ducts, clean inside of garage door and entry doors, scrub shower stall, install new toilet seat and cover, install programmable thermostat, vacuum dust on metal cross beams and vinyl backing on wall insulation, setup mini fridge with water and gatorade, weed eat on side of building and around air conditioning compressor and wrapped insulation around exterior copper pipe running to compressor.

  • Rest Day; online research for interior finishing

Update - Wednesday, July 25, 2018

  • Discussions and photo review with maintenance company for existing lighting retrofit and additional lighting installation

Update - Tuesday, July 24, 2018

  • Today the electricity is scheduled to be turned on by Entergy.
  • Flooring:  Pressure washer is tested and ready to go.  I'll be using a surface cleaner attached to the pressure washer in order to clean the concrete floor and reduce overspray.  The shopvac will help clean up excess water.  I put on my table tennis shoes to test the traction of a section of concrete floor after a light sweeping (no washing involved) and I found the floor to be better than I anticipated.  I'll test the traction again after pressure washing a section of it tonight.
